Meet the Board of Trustees
Dr Richard Morey
Area of expertise: Medicine.
Committee membership: Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Experience: After 35 years as a GP with the last 26 years spent in a small practice outside Ashford, with a particular interest in End of Life Care, I was asked to Chair the Board of Trustees in 2007.
I had previously been a Trustee on the Board for 6 years. I am passionate about high quality end of life care for the people of east Kent and am privileged to be associated with Pilgrims Hospices.
Lynne Selman
Area of expertise: Commissioning and provider experience, corporate governance, PR.
Committee membership: Chair of Complaints Sub-Committee.
Experience: I have board-level management of NHS community & therapy services, including management of community hospitals; commissioning and delivery of hospital urgent care services – in and out of hours; commissioning and providing care across health, social and voluntary sector organisational boundaries; healthcare patient engagement and communications; fundraising/charitable sector experience at Board level.
Dr Arun Dhiman
Area of expertise: Clinical.
Experience: I am a Consultant Physician with a particular interest in Gastroenterology at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. I have clinical experience in management of acute and chronic medical conditions, and development of clinical care pathways. I also refer patients to the Hospice and I am interested in looking at ways that hospital and palliative care services can collaborate to improve end of life care further. My experience will help to advise the Board on clinical policies and strategies.
Lindsay Goode
Area of expertise: Fundraising.
Committee membership: Chair of Fundraising and Marketing Committee, 30th/20th Anniversary Steering Group.
Experience: I bring to the board 37 years experience in Commercial Insurance, meeting people from all walks of life in industry and commerce, both in the UK and internationally. I was a volunteer Pilgrims Hospice fundraiser 1987 – 1999, Ashford Hospice Appeal Co-ordinator 1999 – 2001. I also worked as Head of Fundraising until retirement in November 2007.
Monty August
Area of expertise: General Management and Finance.
Committee membership: Shops Board, Lottery and Finance Committee.
Experience: I have many years of financial and management experience in public quoted companies, involving employment of thousands of people and dealing with great demands on cash and a limited supply of it!
Alasdair Hogarth
Area of expertise: Management.
Committee membership: NICE Advisory Committee (for Public Health) and a member of the Canterbury Diocesan Board of Education.
Experience: I was Headmaster of The Archbishop’s School, Canterbury, for 25 years. Since my retirement I have been undertaking various educational and charitable activities locally and abroad, and I am Chair of Governors at a Church of England Academy. I am married with grown-up children and a gradually increasing number of grandchildren.
Mrs Christine Bentley RN, Dip(HE) DMS, MBE
Area of expertise: Nursing, Manual handling, Productive ward initiative.
Committee membership: Trustee of the Centre for Clinical Studies at the QEQM East Kent Hospitals NHS University Foundation Trust, Executive member and former national president and vice president of the board of the Catholic Nurses for England and Wales for 25 years, Management board for the Lourdes Trust.
Experience: After working in Ireland and again back in England with physically and mentally handicapped children, I commenced my nurse training in 1981 and have 30 years experience in this field. My background in nursing is with adults, starting in general surgery and progressing into acute medicine as a ward manager. I then went on to become a clinical nurse manager and finally matron in acute medicine. In 2003 I was awarded an MBE for services to nursing and the NHS. I formally retired from my matron post in August 2011 and am now still working part time in the NHS doing some project work. I joined the Pilgrims Hospices trustees 3 years ago and I am a member of the Pilgrims Hospice Thanet management committee.
Richard Davis
Area of expertise: Finance.
Committee membership: Finance Committee and acts as the Hon Treasurer ably supported and guided by Monty August in carrying out these financial responsibilities. I always tell everyone who asks how proud I am to be associated with the Hospice movement (and will they please make a donation).
Experience: I trained to be a Chartered Accountant with Reeves & Neylan (now Reeves & Co) in Canterbury and went on to become a founding partner in the firm of Chavereys the specialist firm of Chartered Accountants who are currently based in Faversham. I am a member of STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) and am currently involved with their Charity Special Interest Group and in my professional life act as an auditor or independent examiner for a number of Charities. I have been involved with Pilgrims Hospices since the early 80′s when the first charity shops were being purchased. I have also supported the financing and property searches for Ashford and Thanet Hospices.
Dr Nigel McWilliams
Area of expertise: Primary Care.
Committee membership: Complaints sub-committee.
Experience: I have been a board member since 2009. I have been a full time GP in Canterbury for 22 years; I also work regularly for the local Out of Hours service. I am able to bring first hand experience of primary care and OOH provision to the board as well as a GP perspective to the planned changes to the NHS.
Trisha King
Area of Expertise: Independent Nurse Management Consultant and Regulatory Specialist to the Care Sector.
Committee Memerbship: School Governor, Adviser to the National Care Association, Member of Pilgrims Hospices Trustees since 2008.
Experience: I have a great deal of personnel and management skills acquired across a wide range of demanding roles with over 30 years experience within the Public and Private Health Care Sector. Over the past ten years I have utilised this experience in all aspects of care home management and business development.
Steve Auty, Chief Executive
Area of expertise: Change and programme management, finance, general administration and delivering quality services to customers.
Committee membership: Fundraising and Marketing Committee, Finance Committee, Shops Board.
Experience: 30 years of people and resource management, creativity, flexibility and the ability to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines.
Paula Evans
Area of expertise: Nursing leadership and development, Development of clinical strategy & service delivery, Management of healthcare services.
Committee membership: Operational Management Board, Information Governance Group, Education and Training Group, Nursing and Therapies Professional Practice Forum.
Experience: Registered Nurse, Specialist Practitioner District Nursing, BSc Nursing Studies, MSc Health Services Management.
Background in nursing, leadership and senior management roles in public, private and charitable sectors of health and social care services.
Dr Claire Butler
Area of expertise: Director of Medicine and Research, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Honorary Senior Lecturer University of Kent, Caldicott guardian for Pilgrims Hospices.
Committee membership: Operational Management Board, Information governance (chair), Research facilitation forum (chair), Integrated governance and local managers Pilgrims Hospices.
Experience: 20 years experience as a Palliative care physician; medical leadership, training and academic experience.
Peter Simpson
Area of expertise: Finance and IT.
Committee membership: Finance Committee, Information Governance Committee, Fundraising and Marketing Committee and Hospice Shops Board.
Experience: Fellow of Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales since 1976, Group Financial Director : Burberrys Ltd, Group Financial Director : Faber and Faber Ltd
