Hundreds brave the elements for Pilgrims Hospices Summer Fair

Pilgrims Hospice Ashford summer fair 2017

Despite torrential rain, strong winds, thunder and even hailstones, the annual Pilgrims Hospice Ashford Summer Fair proved to be a resounding success. More than 2,000 people of all ages showed their support for the charity, coming along on Saturday 5 August to enjoy the many famous games, beautiful crafts and delicious refreshments on offer in the magnificent grounds of the hospice.

Visitors were not deterred by the weather, donning ponchos so they could carry on having fun. As a result, more than £21,000 was raised that will help the charity continue to provide its vital services for people with incurable illness in east Kent and their families.

Many stalls achieved record breaking successes, including the much loved book stall displayed in the hospice’s Therapy Centre and the Hawaiian themed coconut shy, which was manned by hospice nurses. This year’s fair also welcomed new additions: a popular VIP cream tea area, exciting new games and even a visit from Spider-Man and Captain America!

Local estate agents Andrew & Co kindly sponsored the event again, also helping to collect bottles and other prizes. Other companies including Stagecoach, Consort Frozen Foods, K and L Wines and Faversham Ices also contributed generously.

Victoria Friar, Pilgrims Community Fundraising Manager for the Ashford area said: “I am always blown away by the tremendous levels of support for our charity. It was great to see so many familiar faces and lots of new ones, too.

A huge thank you to everyone who showed their support.

“People travel from far and wide to attend this event and after many months of planning we are thrilled that so much money has been raised – enough, in fact, to fund more than 1,000 hours of the services we provide completely free of charge.”

Victoria added: “A huge thank you to everyone who showed their support, and to the many individuals and community groups who kindly volunteered to help make this event so successful.”

Each year Pilgrims supports hundreds of local people coping with a life limiting illness and their families. The charity offers a range of services: from end of life care given on its wards, to its new Wellbeing and Social Programme supporting people to live well and stay independent after they are diagnosed.
