Well wishers donate thousands in 18 months

Shoppers have given £4,000 worth of loose change over the past 18 months as they pass a wishing well at Westwood Cross, Broadstairs.
Once that cash has been collected, dried and sorted, it is donated to local charity Pilgrims Hospices and on Thursday the latest sweep of the well pushed the total to £4,000 collected since October 2011.
The well was made and donated by construction company Cardy in aid of Pilgrims Hospices, Thanet.
Centre manager Tom Price said: “The wishing well has proved very popular with children asking parents to give them loose change to throw into it and many people just love to support a local charity such as Pilgrims Hospices.”
Cardy contracts director Mike Stannard said: “We were delighted to make the wishing well as many of our staff live in the area and, like many others, understand how the wonderful hospice care touches the lives of so many friends or family.”
Pilgrims regional fundraising manager Karen Kenward said: “This is a fantastic amount to collect. We really appreciate the generosity of Cardy and Westwood Cross for donating and placing the wishing well on our behalf. I would like to thank all the local shoppers who have contributed to this wonderful wishing well throughout the last two years.
“The money raised means Pilgrims Hospices can continue to provide free care to people with life limiting illnesses across east Kent.”
