’260 women saddle up for first Pilgrims Divas on Wheels ride’
Picturesque countryside, great organisation and a supportive atmosphere are just some of the many positive comments following the first Divas On Wheels women only cycle ride held by Pilgrims Hospices on Sunday 23 June 2013.
Setting out from the premises of cycle shop Biketart – a keen supporter of the charity – on the Barham Business estate near Canterbury, 260 women chose to ride either a 25 mile or 50 mile route through the countryside. There were also dozens of experienced riders taking part as heroes for the day leading small groups or offering roadside repairs and assistance to anybody who needed it.
Pilgrims regional fundraising manager Deborah Kellond said she was delighted by the way the whole event turned out. “We’ve had a lot of positive feedback – everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we were extremely fortunate to have the support of so many individuals and businesses in making our first Divas On Wheels such a success. It was especially encouraging seeing so many women finding strength in numbers and having the confidence to take to the roads, it showed how much more you can achieve as a group supporting each other. We hope lots of the riders will carry on with their healthy new hobby!”
“We are still counting the money raised but early indications are we have already raised more than 6,000 and there is still sponsorship money and more to come. We are so grateful to everyone for getting behind us – all the money raised will go directly into patient care where it’s needed most.”
Amid sunshine and showers, the cyclists enjoyed the route taking them through villages including Bridge, Bossingham, Stelling Minnis, Rhodes Minnis, Lyminge, and Elham before returning to Barham.
Women who chose the longer way around took in Waltham, the Pilgrims Way, a refreshment stop at Pilgrims Hospice Ashford, Aldington, Brabourne and Postling before rejoining the shorter route at Lyminge.
On their return, riders discovered that the Divas Village had popped up offering them the chance for a well earned massage with Woodlands Hair and Beauty and also Bodywell, while a team from Steven James Hairdressing were kept busy restyling helmet flattened hair. Biketart ran a barbecue, refreshments and a stand selling women’s specific cycle clothing. Solley’s ice cream brought their 1971 vintage van offering cooling cornets and Kent police PCSOs were kept busy with their bike security scheme.
British Cycling’s women’s arm, Breeze Network, travelled from Surrey to support Kent’s first women’s charity cycle ride. Musicians from Whitstable based Samba Pelo Mar kept the rhythm going with a drumming display. Every rider received an eco-bag of vouchers and promotional offers as well supplied by event sponsor, Pink Lady Apples. Other sponsors who made the event possible were Stagecoach East Kent, Noel Tatt, Red Dragon IT, Crew Clothings, Brakes, Sainsbury’s, Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shop, Body Shop and Crabtree & Evelyn.
