Andrew’s story
Andrew Reeves was born in Leicester in 1959 before moving south to Sussex and then Kent with his family. He worked as a Mechanical Electrical Engineer in Ashford, a job that he thoroughly enjoyed for 30 years. Unfortunately in 2008, at the age of 49, Andrew was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
In his seven-month illness Andrew had two stays in the Pilgrims Hospice in Ashford where he and his family received care and support. His brother Richard recalled, “The hospice is a wonderful place and we’ll never forget what you did for our family. You couldn’t have found a nicer bunch of people than those who treated him.”
He continued, “Right from the start of his disease Andrew was keen to talk about what happened to his belongings when he died. There were a few people who he wanted to spread his assets out to, but he was keen to leave his house to charity. He wanted other people to benefit when he died.”
Richard supported the decision. “Andrew worked hard and I encouraged him to do as he wanted with his money and his house. He knew that the Hospices had to be self-reliant to raise funds and was keen to support them.”
Andrew’s incredibly generous gift of his house will support the work of the hospice. 80% of Pilgrims Hospices income is spent directly on patient care.
