Pam’s story

Pamela Grace Gann was born in Surrey in 1926. She attended the convent school in Carshalton before working for the BBC. After much persuasion, she convinced her family that, although she was quiet, she also had an adventurous streak, and joined the WRNS in 1949. She served in Malta, Northern Ireland and various UK posts until she retired in 1980.

After caring for her sick mother, Pam and her sister Daphne moved to Whitstable, where the family had spent many happy childhood holidays. She was later joined by her sister-in-law Pat after her brother Alan died in 1990.

Unfortunately Pam was diagnosed with cancer in July 2005. She received treatment at the Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury before she died at home in 2008. Pat said, “Pam never complained or asked ‘why me?’ – she suffered with dignity and courage.”

Pat continued, “Pam wanted to give a gift to Pilgrims Hospices in her will because she got so much out of her time at the day hospice. She particularly enjoyed the art sessions and looked forward to going every week. Pam was so grateful for the care that she received that she wanted to leave a gift.”

She added, “I am glad that Pam left part of her estate to Pilgrims Hospices. I have been told that the £20,000 gift is enough to buy half of the medical supplies needed for a whole year. She would be really pleased to know that her gift has helped so many people.”
