Absolutely anyone of all fitness levels can take part. A Night to Shine is an opportunity for you to come together with friends, family or colleagues and stroll under the stars, at your own pace, for fun, fitness or in memory of a loved one. Completing the 5 mile distance may be more challenging for some, but the route is designed to be as accessible as possible for those with different levels of mobility.
A Night to Shine is a family event and there is no lower age limit for taking part. If you're under 18 years of age, you must be accompanied by a participating adult and have a signed parental consent form.
- Early Bird entry: Adults £12, Under 18s £8 (closes 04/8/19)
- Standard entry: Adults £15, Under 18s £12 (closes 15/9/19)
- On the night entry: Adults £20, Under 18s £15
Children under 3 go free no matter when you sign up.
(Entry includes T-shirt, medal and torch)
Much of the entry fee goes towards running the event and making sure that you have an enjoyable and safe experience. We’d love you to raise sponsorship for your walk (after all, not everyone would walk this far) but its not essential. If you'd rather not ask your friends and family to sponsor you, we hope you might consider making a personal donation towards the care we provide. This can be done during the online registration process or at any time on our website (orange button above), at our hospices in Ashford, Canterbury or Margate, or on the day of the event.
It costs Pilgrims Hospices £14 million a year to provide skilled and compassionate care to our community, and events like A Night to Shine help us to continue caring for local people as they near end of life. Please download a sponsorship form, set up your own online fundraising page with JustGiving or call 01227 812 609. Don’t forget to encourage your sponsors to tick the Gift Aid box if they’re eligible to do so; for every £1 donated we’ll be able to claim an extra 25p from the Government at no cost to you or your sponsors. It makes a huge difference.

No, the routes use public footpaths and pavements, often alongside roads. Walkers must be vigilant at all times when navigating these sections, especially if you have children with you. There will be marshals at key positions, such as road crossings. However, these marshals are not empowered to control traffic and you must take full responsibility that it is safe to cross before doing so.
We advise walkers to wear items of fluorescent or reflective clothing and our signature flashing accessories to assist with being seen.
The routes for Pilgrims Hospices A Night to Shine 2019 will be announced in the summer.
The walk will be signed using bright orange way-markers throughout the route. There will also be event marshals positioned at key points along the route to assist.
If you change your mind about which distance you wish to complete, this can be done by letting the registration desk know during check-in.
Yes. We have checked the routes and there are friendly marshals at all key points to assist if necessary.
There is one narrow alleyway on the Ashford route. If your wheelchair is wider than 3ft, please call the Ashford fundraising team on 01233 504102 before 20th September.
A Night to Shine is a walking event. Due to event logistics and participant safety on route we advise against jogging or running the route.
It isn't a race. A Night to Shine is about walking together in support of local hospice care. Come and walk among friends, and make new ones along the way!
Yes. A Night to Shine is an opportunity to remember loved ones in a positive atmosphere, among others who have experienced similar feelings. During the signing-in period before the walk begins, we will have paper memory lanterns available. These can be personalised and placed into the lantern display area within the start venue.
You can also download a 'I'm shining for...' poster template from www.pilgrimshospices.org/shine to pin proudly on your T-shirt for the walk.
There will also be a memory wall in the registration area where you can place messages and photos of loved ones.
What happens if I have a problem on the route or I do not think I can finish the walk for any reason?
The routes are accessible and well paved. Water and chocolate will be available to keep you hydrated and for that boost of energy to get you round. First aiders and medical response vehicles will be positioned to respond in case of an emergency.
If you have any health concerns please consult your GP before taking part. If there is a medical emergency you should call 999. The emergency services are aware that the event is taking place.
We're looking for volunteers to help with our registration areas and route marshalling at each location. Contact the fundraising team at your local hospice or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.

No, unfortunately, we don't allow dogs to take part in A Night to Shine as we can't cater for them along the walk and it can be difficult to manage on the route, especially during busier or more crowded sections of the route. However, we do think dogs make for great training companions!
