Growing Compassionate Schools: Supporting young people through loss – Online event

Monday 8 December 2025

Join us in shaping a more compassionate future for young people.

Pilgrims Hospices, through its Compassionate Communities programme, invites schools, youth services, healthcare providers, charities and community leaders to a vital stakeholder event focused on enhancing bereavement support for children and young people across east Kent.

This event follows on from Children's Grief Awareness Week, whose theme for this year is: Sharing Stories, Strengthening Hope.

Together, we’ll explore how open conversations about death, dying, loss and grief can be better supported in school and community settings – ensuring that no child feels alone in their loss.

The Children’s Bereavement Network Report 2022 found:

  • An estimated 46,300 dependent children aged 0-17 years are bereaved of a parent each year in the UK.
  • 127 children are newly bereaved every day
  • 1 in 29 5-16 year olds has been bereaved of a parent or sibling
  • An average of 1 child in every class has been bereaved of parent or sibling

A compassionate community begins with honest conversations

We’re calling on schools and colleges from across east Kent to join forces in building a more supportive, hope-filled network for grieving children and teens. Together, we can make a difference.

We invite schools to share their stories of successes and challenges, so we can build a network of support that strengthens hope.

Join our stakeholder event to find out how collaboration between schools and Pilgrims Hospices can make a real difference in the lives of grieving children across east Kent.

We’ll explore how, through partnership, we can:

  • Improve bereavement support for children and teens in schools
  • Engage schools in open, age-appropriate conversations about death and grief
  • Build compassionate schools and networks around young people

Every child deserves compassion and understanding when facing loss.

Let’s work together to make sure no child grieves alone.
