Palliative and end-of-life care impacts all of us at some point in our lives, regardless of age or circumstance. Whether we are facing the end of life ourselves, caring for someone who is, or grieving the loss of a loved one, the need for this type of care is undeniable. With over half a million people projected to pass away annually, and a significant portion living with a life expectancy of less than a year, the demand for such care is growing. As our population ages, this need will only increase, highlighting the importance of proactive planning for end-of-life care and treatment.
Death and the dying process are unavoidable aspects of life, but living as fully as possible until our final moments is important to all of us. It’s essential to address the needs of individuals navigating the challenges of terminal illness, death, and bereavement, along with their families, caregivers, and communities. This involves recognising and honouring their priorities, preferences and wishes.
To address this, the Ambitions Framework for Palliative and End of Life Care was developed through a partnership of national organisations in both the statutory and voluntary sectors. This framework outlines the shared vision to improve end-of-life care by fostering partnerships and collaborative initiatives among organizations at local level across England.
