New cycle ride is one for the ladies

Posted on 5 March 2013

It’s all girls together for Pilgrims Hospices latest fundraising event launched on Monday.

Post ride pampering, samba music, independent retailers and picturesque views of the Elham Valley are all promised for the charity’s women only Divas on Wheels bike ride to be held on Sunday 23 June.

Among the riders who have already said they will be taking part is ITV presenter, keen cyclist and designer, Anna Glowinski.

She said: “I’m delighted that Pilgrims Hospices is organising this ride exclusively for women and I’d love as many girls to join me for this fun day out which is raising money for a great local cause at the same time.”

The event is new for 2013 and aims to take a fresh approach to the cycling challenge concept. It’s aimed at women of all cycling abilities and levels of fitness. Riders can choose from two circular, scenic routes of 25 or 50 miles through east Kent’s countryside, both starting at the Biketart cycle store in Barham near Canterbury. The business has been a keen supporter of Pilgrims Hospices for many years.

Samba music, pampering sessions, helmet hair rescue, barbecue and lots of retail therapy  will await riders in the at the finish line in the specially-created, Divas Village. En route, “Bike Heroes” will ensure nobody takes a wrong turn and can lend a hand to carry out running repairs.

Pilgrims Hospices regional fundraising manager Deborah Kellond said: “The event is very much aimed at women of 14 years plus who like the idea of a pleasant ride through the countryside without feeling they must have special bikes, equipment or outfits to join in!

“We’re arranging three training rides with some basic bike maintenance and posture checks by our hospice physiotherapist, Claire Myers. It’s not a race and women have all day to complete the distance. There are treat stops along the way and lots of motivation from our Bike Heroes.

“We have been really well supported by Stagecoach East Kent, Pink Lady Apples, Red Dragon IT, Woodlands Hair and Beauty, Steven James Hairdressing, Karisma Design and Crew Clothing – a huge thank you for making this event happen.”

Earlybird online registration costs £20 (or £25 on the day) via:
