Stan the Man’s Christmas Lights Raise £2,110

Posted on 11 February 2013

Stan Truelove, owner of Down to Earth Greengrocers in Herne Bay has been putting on his incredible Christmas display at his home in South Street, Canterbury for over seven years and has raised over £30,000 for Pilgrims Hospices.

Deborah Kellond, Regional Fundraising Manager for Pilgrims Hospices received a cheque last week for Stan’s 2012 Christmas fundraising, a grand total of £2,110! Deborah said: “Stan is a long term supporter of Pilgrims Hospices and we are delighted with the amount that he has raised this year. It is a testament to the dedication of Stan and his family, who were out collecting through the freezing and very wet weather to raise this incredible amount. We are really grateful for Stan’s continued support.”

Stan, his partner Sandra, his two daughters and his son-in-laws work incredibly hard to transform his house and the house next door, which he also owns, each year into a magical Santa’s Grotto. The houses are decorated with lights, fitted with snow machines and a variety of illuminated decorations cover the front of both houses. The family are outside collecting every single night from 4pm until 9pm and have recently invested in a float to take the lights out to those who cannot come to see them.

Stan said: “I really enjoy seeing the look on people’s faces when they come to the house. It really is a magical experience and I have been doing this since my children were young. Being able to raise this money for Pilgrims Hospices is amazing and I am very grateful for the support of my family and our neighbours in South Street.”

Stan’s incredible donation of £2,110 will pay for over 100 hours of nursing care for patients with long term illnesses. Pilgrims Hospices cares for over 2,000 patients per year in the east Kent area and needs to raise over £9.5million to continue to provide this care free of charge.
