“Herbie Road Again” with fantastic results!

Posted on 20 December 2016

A European charity road trip for motor enthusiasts, Frank, Pete and Andy, resulted in a wonderful fundraising achievement for the trio. Their friends, work colleagues and families gave very generously to the three who drove on the national “Benidorm or Bust” rally from Banbury to the Costa Brava in a few days.

The team came third with their completely customised Fiat 500 which looked remarkably like the original VW of Herbie fame.  Months of dedication and skill went into making the little car look incredible.  She made it all the way to Benidorm but sadly gave up on the challenging peaks in Andorra and had to be rescued a few weeks later.

Deborah Kellond, Community Fundraising Manager, met the trio and friends recently and was presented with a cheque for £2750.  This exceeded the money that they raised for Leukaemia Research and was achieved through the efforts of their colleagues at the RAC, Stagecoach, DHL and all their supporters who got behind the team.

Deborah commented: “We met the team, minus Andy, at Pilgrims earlier in the year for a launch photo shoot. Herbie caused much excitement and it was great to hear about their plans for the rally and an update on their fundraising.  I had no idea how successful they had been in raising such a huge amount of money and I can’t thank them enough for choosing Pilgrims Hospices to be the beneficiary of their motoring adventure.”

The money raised represents over 137 hours of specialist nursing care for our patients and emotional and practical support for their families and carers.

Frank and brother, Pete’s, father was cared for at the hospice in Canterbury and the brothers wanted to give something back to the charity.
