Richard’s Dry 2017 and 100-mile Pilgrims Cycle Challenge
Posted on 20 March 2017
Richard Perkins from Folkestone has set himself an awe-inspiring challenge – to give up alcohol for the whole year and take on the 100-mile Pilgrims Cycle Challenge.
Here, Richard shares what motivated him to take on these two tests of endurance for Pilgrims Hospices.
Pilgrims holds a very special place in my heart; my mother sadly passed away at Pilgrims Hospice Ashford in August 2014 after a battle with breast cancer.
Though she was only at the hospice for two days, it made a huge difference to her comfort in her last hours. The care she experienced from Pilgrims staff still astounds me to this day. You have to be a very special kind of person to work there. My family and I will be forever in their debt, however much I’m able to raise.
Over the past few years, since my mother died, I’ve completed the 100-mile Cycle Challenge twice. I’m planning to take on the route again this year, along with my great riding friends GK Riders (Ginger’s Kitchen, Hythe). You’ll see us in our orange and black team kit – we will stand out, that’s for sure!
The care my mother experienced from Pilgrims staff still astounds me to this day.
But my biggest challenge isn’t the 100-mile bike ride – I know I can do that because I’ve done it before – it’s my Dry 2017! People who know me know that I’m partial to a libation from time to time, so giving up alcohol for a whole year wasn’t a decision I took lightly. It’s certainly attracted a lot of interest, though.
My overall yearly target is £3,000 and I’ve raised more than £800 already with nine months still to go. I must be nuts!
I’ve also recently taken over as Head Professional at Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club. The members have been really supportive by sponsoring me, so I’m locked into it and am looking to raise as much money as possible for Pilgrims.
There will be other families out there who need the hospice in their lives. So, if you would like to sponsor me please visit my JustGiving page.
Pilgrims Hospices Cycle Challenge takes place on Sunday 30 April 2017.
