Hair raising skydive

Posted on 26 October 2017

Respected local hairdressing salon, Steven James of Market Place Faversham, has presented Pilgrims Hospices with an incredible £3,000 cheque. James Flower, the owner of Steven James salon, with stylist Siobhan Miles, took to the skies with tandem skydives, all to raise important funds for hospice care in their local area.

People’s generosity is always overwhelming.

Faversham salon owner and long term Pilgrims supporter, James said: “A skydive has always been something I wanted to do, the bonus was raising the money for Pilgrims. Our customers’ friends and families have been absolutely amazing with supporting our sponsorship and Just Giving page. People’s generosity is always overwhelming.”

On 17 September James and Siobhan, along with family and friends, headed off to Headcorn for the arranged jump. The weather was not proving to be very inspirational and for sometime they weren’t even sure if the jump would take place due to heavy cloud. However, as the morning progressed the skies cleared and before long they were up and away.

Salon stylist, Siobhan said: “I’ve only flown once before and the whole experience was very exciting. I really wasn’t sure what to expect, in fact I felt quite calm before pushing out of the plane at 10,000 feet. I would definitely do it again but maybe not immediately.”

The family owned business has salons in Faversham and Canterbury and regularly supports Pilgrims Hospices with their famous Christmas Raffle that generates huge fundraising cheques for the local charity.

James added: “We’re very proud of our achievements. It really takes some courage to step out of a plane at 2 1/2 miles high.

We are now thinking about a challenge for next year.

“We are now thinking about a challenge for next year to continue our fundraising support for Pilgrims. We will be keeping our feet on the ground for the next one!”

Deborah Kellond, Pilgrims Hospices Community Fundraising Manager said: “We are delighted to have the continued support of James and the Steven James Hairdressing salons. This amazing donation will really help to make a difference to those who need our help the most.”

Each year Pilgrims supports hundreds of local people coping with a life limiting illness and their families. The charity offers a range of services: from end of life care given on its wards, to its new Wellbeing and Social Programme supporting people after they are diagnosed to live well and stay independent.
