School children share Christmas tree cheer with Pilgrims

Posted on 13 December 2017

Twelve pupils from St Martin’s Church of England Primary School came to decorate Pilgrims Hospices Christmas Trees with beautiful handmade decorations they had been making at school this week.

The year five and six boys and girls dressed the trees in the hospice reception and therapy centre.  Jo Tocher, Teaching Assistant and Paula White, Family Liaison Officer for St Martin’s joined them on the trip.

Evie raised £700 on her sponsored walk.

Nine year old Evie, one of the year five pupils also presented a donation for £700 to Wendy Kelk, the Ashford Hospice Manager.  Evie with her mum, dad and cockapoo Buddy had just finished a sponsored walk from Folkestone and Dymchurch in aid of the charity.  She had been inspired to support by a recent visit from Pilgrims volunteer, Kate Love. Evie said: “She explained lots about the hospices and how important they are.  I decided I would like to raise some money to help and decided to do a sponsored walk. I wanted to raise £30 but managed £700, I was so pleased!”

St Martin’s School donated a further £267, raised by holding a cream tea for the children’s grandparents.  Miss White said: “The grandparents really enjoyed the opportunity to share time with the pupils and reviewed some of their best pieces of work.  The children sang carols and we are so pleased to have been able to offer Pilgrims Hospices the donations received from the day.”

“This is my third year of bringing the pupils to the hospice to decorate the trees.  We believe the experience helps them to understand and appreciate the care the hospice provides.  The patients enjoy meeting and chatting with the children who all enjoyed explaining how they made the handmade decorations.”

A huge Pilgrims thank you to the pupils from St Martin’s School for decorating our Christmas trees.
