A sea of Santas take Herne Bay by storm for hospice

Posted on 4 December 2017

Herne Bay’s coastline was covered with a beautiful sea of red Santas this Sunday as more than 800 fancy dressed fundraisers took part in a festive fun run for Pilgrims Hospices.

Adults of all ages, children and festively dressed furry four-legged friends raced, jogged and walked along the town’s seafront for the Santas on the Run! sponsored event raising an early estimated £16k for the hospice charity.

Crowds of spectators watched as the hoards of white-bearded participants gathered for the start at the town’s Bandstand, before cheering them along for their 5k or 3k dash beside the sea.

We are absolutely delighted with the support we’ve received.

Deborah Kellond, Community Fundraising Manager for Pilgrims Hospices, said: “This was our very first Santa’s on the Run! event and we are absolutely delighted with the support we’ve received from the generous community and 60 volunteers who came out in full force to make it a success.”

Each year Pilgrims supports hundreds of local people coping with a life limiting illness and their families. The charity offers a range of services: from end of life care given on its wards, to its new wellbeing and social programme supporting people after they are diagnosed to live well and stay independent.

This care continues 24/7 throughout the Christmas period so, as Deborah explains, the funds raised by the sporty Santas will help provide vital care:

“Every £20 raised by this event could pay for an hour of nursing care for a patient on our wards, within Pilgrims Therapy Centres or at home. We would like to thank our marvellous local sponsors, Active Life Ltd and EKS Ltd and other business supporters, Jenner (Construction Ltd), Makcari’s Coffee Shop and A World of Celebrations for contributing to the success of this new fundraising event. We really could not do it without them!”

The next Pilgrims challenge will be a Fire and Ice Walk in early March, taking place in Canterbury, Folkestone, Ashford and Ramsgate. More information is available when you click here.
