Buxton the cat gets ready for sea voyage

Posted on 27 June 2013

It was all aboard the Amalia at Ramsgate Harbour on Wednesday evening to wish Buxton the cat and his owners bon voyage before setting sail for a 2,000 mile voyage around Britain.

Buxton, a 10 year old British blue shorthair, will be aboard the 44 foot yacht with Steve and Helena Neal, who come from Whitstable, for the 11 week adventure, which begins this weekend, to help raise money for Pilgrims Hospices.

Wishing them well were the charity’s Chief Executive Steve Auty, the Commodore of Royal Temple Yacht Club Mike Brand and his wife Jo.

Buxton proudly showed off his purpose made hi-vis lifejacket before settling in the covered cockpit from where he can enjoy a good view.

Amalia has become Buxton’s second home during the past few months as Steve and Helena prepare for the voyage and he has found his sea legs.

Buxton’s fundraising got off to a flying start after a supper event at the yacht club earlier in June with the total standing at £1,200.

Steve Neal said: “The voyage is something we have planned for a long time and gives us the chance to support the hospices with sponsorship for Buxton.  We chose Pilgrims in memory of my mother who was cared for at its hospice in Thanet 12 years ago.

“Buxton is used to life on board and takes it all in his stride. Sensibly, he doesn’t stay on deck for long but prefers to be behind the cockpit windscreen looking like he’s in charge!”
