A team of East Kent College staff presented local charity Pilgrims Hospice with a cheque of over £1,400 following their fundraising bike ride ‘Divas on Wheels’.
The 15 staff, from all areas of the College, cycled 740 miles between them across Kent in the charity ride on Sunday 23 June, raising a total of £1,431.
College Sports Maker Stephanie Howard headed up the team, riding 50 miles on the day herself.
“Pilgrims Hospices makes a huge difference to people with life-limiting illnesses, and as an independent charity it relies hugely on the generosity of the local community. ‘Divas on Wheels’ was a fantastic opportunity for us to challenge ourselves and enlighten others by doing so. I had not been cycling for very long, but the challenge inspired me to get on the saddle and rack up the mileage,” she said.
Pilgrims Hospice’s Fundraising Manager, Deborah Kellond said the money would be invaluable for the charity, and thanked the team for the contribution to the bike ride which raised over £15,000.
“I am absolutely delighted that not only did the East Kent College women really embrace our first women’s cycle ride by mobilising the largest team but that they raised so much money at the same time.
A personal thank you to Stephanie Howard for coordinating the girls and motivating them too! I know that it was a personal challenge for many of them and to cycle 25 or 50 miles is no mean feat.
£1400 is a huge contribution to our fundraising efforts and will enable us to continue to offer palliative care to our patients and a range of other services to their families and carers, all free of charge,” she said.
