Pilgrims Hospices opened its latest retail venture on the outskirts of Margate town centre on Monday 18 February at Tivoli Brooks (adjacent to Howdens and Jewsons). The store is open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday.

Situated within a former Victorian soft drinks factory it is being remodelled to become a treasure trove of pre-loved furniture, carpets, fashion items, sporting goods and books.

One of 11 specialist shops run by Pilgrims Hospices, the size of the store enables larger items to be displayed at their best – something which cannot always be achieved in the charity’s smaller shops.

Heather Sawney, Head of Retail for Pilgrims Hospices, explained: “Tivoli Brooks offers us a different opportunity to share items with the local community which have previously been hidden away from public view. This will enable our customers to buy large furniture, rugs, sports items as well as bric-a-brac, vinyl and artwork (which we are currently locating from existing premises). By Easter, Tivoli Brooks will be fully stocked with a wide offer, with items being added daily.”

“The fabulous scale of this site and the quirky layout means we can really be creative. In the coming months we’ll be holding community events with live music and local food.”

There are also opportunities for volunteers to join the team and be trained to work at Tivoli Brooks. Adds Heather: “It’s quite unusual for a local charity to have a facility of this size so it’s a very exciting project. With so much going on and the community involvement, it will be an enjoyable place to work, plus you can be part of a team raising vital money for palliative care.”

Anybody interested in volunteering at any of Pilgrims Hospices shops can phone 01227 640000 or visit the charity’s website www.pilgrimshospices.org
