Posted on 10 July 2013
This years wheelie bin race at the Three Horseshoes, Staplestreet Hernhill has raised over £1,400 for Pilgrims Hospices, it was announced this week.
The charity challenge saw new levels of weird and wonderful entries for 2013 with everything from Hula girls to the Flintstones. Over 100 people got creative with fancy dress and came along for the fun filled family event which is in its thirteenth year.
Fifteen teams took to the Staplestreet straight with the hope of taking away a trophy. Best dressed bin went to Team Rawhide Gallopers. Best dressed racers went to the Red Lion Romans with their chariot while, despite the three compulsory beer stops along the way, the McDonnell Transport Team took first prize for the fastest speed.
Kay McDonnell, one of Pilgrims Hospices Counsellors and dedicated wheelie bin racer from Hernhill says: “The annual wheelie bin race is recognised as a wonderful community event. It is enjoyed by everyone and raises a great amount of money each year.
“It was a fantastic day with lovely weather, some brilliant live music from the Blues Bandits and a delicious BBQ and hog roast. What a great way to celebrate summer and support a local charity at the same time!”
