Pilgrims Hospices Cycle Challenge Sunday 4th May 2014
It’s back, and it’s bigger and better than ever!
For the fifth year running we get set for our signature Cycle Challenge.
Once again, the local countryside will be whirring with the sound of spokes as cyclists who like a personal challenge and a healthy day out raise money for Pilgrims Hospices take to the roads.
This ride is a firm favourite in our fundraising calendar, more than 1,000 riders of all ages and abilities wheeled out for the occasion in 2013 and raised over £88, 000 for our hospices. We are so grateful for your support and we hope to continue the success this year.
We hope we can offer new riders an enjoyable hobby, plus a chance to get fit and socialise, knowing their contributions really will make a difference.
Steve Auty, Pilgrims Hospices Chief Executive
Cyclists can choose between an exacting 78 miles long route taking in all three locations or two slightly shorter routes both starting in Canterbury but finishing at either Ashford or Thanet.
This year there is also our brand new route, the ‘Pilgrims 100’ which is a serious distance but open to cyclists with the stamina and ability to complete it in one day!
Click the pink links to reveal the routes below:
- 100 miles ‘Pilgrims 100’ a circular route which connects our three hospices with the extra distance in the flatter Thanet area
- 78 miles ‘Tri-Hospice’ circular route which connects our Hospices in Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet
- 48 miles A slightly flatter circular route between Canterbury and Thanet Hospices
- 45 miles A scenic but more undulating circular route between Ashford and Canterbury Hospices
The cost for all routes is £30 per person, with an early bird registration of £25 if you register online before Wednesday 30th April 2014.
Thanks to the huge generosity of our sponsors and our 1,000 participants we ensure all money raised through sponsorship and registration goes straight into providing east Kent’s hospice care. This year’s headline sponsor is Barretts Group, and we also have the kind support of Noel Tatt, KCFG, Biketart, London Array, Move-it Channelmoving, Argentis and Ovenden plus a range of supporters. If you are interested in sponsoring then there’s still time, please use the contact details below.

Get training with us
There will be a series of eight training rides starting in March to get you cycling fit and to build up your confidence, especially if you are a novice cyclist. We will be catering for all abilities on these rides. We want you to feel good about your cycling and have the best possible experience on the actual day. Four of the rides will be free and four will be part of our Sociable Cycling programme where we suggest a small donation of £5. Download the listing here Cycle challenge training rides 2014
If you can’t wait until then, we have regular rides with our Sociable Cycling Programme. Most of the rides will be around 30 miles in length and will be for cyclists of moderate ability. The terrain and length of the rides will be detailed on the event listing.
Do I have to get sponsorship?
We would love you to try and collect sponsorship money but it is not essential. Pilgrims Hospices costs in excess of £10.5 million a year to run and events like these help us to continue caring for local people at the end of their lives. Please download a sponsor form, or click on the button to the right to set up your own online fundraising page at Just Giving Take a look at our online Fundraising Guide for more tips and ideas.
Last year Pilgrims Hospices claimed an additional £100, 000 from the Government thanks to everyone who gift aided their donation. Please encourage any sponsors to just tick the Gift Aid box, it makes a huge difference to us. Find out more about how Gift Aid works with our online calculator.
Are there other ways to raise money?
We are still using our text to donate number: LOOP12 plus the £ symbol and the amount that you would like to donate, up to £10, to 70070. This is a great way to encourage your friends, colleagues and families to sponsor you easily – there are no excuses for lack of change when everyone seems to have a mobile phone.
Thanks our generous sponsors and participants we ensure all money raised goes straight into east Kent’s hospice care.
Thank you to all our generous 2014 sponsors
