Have you heard about Pilgrims Hospices Stepping Stones Bereavement Services?
Grief is a natural yet overwhelming experience that often leaves us feeling isolated and unsure where to seek support.
Pilgrims Stepping Stones Bereavement Support services are here to help, offering comprehensive support to any adult in east Kent, regardless of the circumstances surrounding their loss.
Stepping Stones provides a variety of support groups in Ashford, Canterbury, and Thanet. These groups are open to all adults in east Kent. The program’s specially trained volunteers guide individuals through the grieving process, helping them understand and navigate the complex emotions that come with loss. By sharing experiences and listening to others, participants often find comfort in knowing they are not alone, forming new friendships and support networks that can extend beyond their grief.
In 2019, Pilgrims introduced Stepping Stones Bereavement Cafés, held monthly at each local Pilgrims hospice. These cafés offer a relaxed, safe environment for bereaved adults to meet others, share their experiences, and learn strategies to cope with grief. Each 1.5-hour session is limited in size to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate as much or as little as they wish. The Ashford café meets on the first Friday of each month, Canterbury on the first Saturday, and Thanet on the last Friday, with refreshments provided.
Recognising the benefits of nature, gentle exercise, and social interaction, Pilgrims also launched Stepping Stones Bereavement Walk & Talk Groups. These weekly walks (weather permitting) offer a tranquil setting for bereaved adults to support each other through their grief. Walks take place in various locations across east Kent, including Conningbrook Lakes in Ashford, Pilgrims Hospice Canterbury, and Pegwell Nature Reserve or The Westcliff in Ramsgate.
Pilgrims is eager to expand these invaluable services by recruiting new volunteers. We are especially interested in volunteers to help establish new walking and coffee groups in the Romney Marsh and Deal areas. If you are passionate about supporting others through their grief, please contact our Bereavement Services Coordinators at [email protected]or call 01233504 127 (Option 2) to learn more about volunteering opportunities.

Isabel Smith, Senior Trusts Fundraiser, works with teams across the charity, both clinical and wider support staff, helping with the delivery of a range of projects, from replacing vital equipment to renovating spaces in the hospice buildings.
Over the past few months, the charity has been very grateful for the continued support we receive from charitable trusts and foundations. With this, we have been able to achieve so much:
Our kitchen garden at the Canterbury hospice was funded by Kent Community Foundation through their Environment Fund, and with care of our green-fingered volunteers, we can grow our own fresh produce.
Our Bed Appeal has been kindly supported by a number of Charitable Trusts, including Cantiacorum Foundation.
The R V Coleman Trust, the Frank Brake Charitable Trust and Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, who are all helping our patients to remain comfortable.
Funding for renovations of one of our family lounges at the Ashford hospice has been given a kick-start with support from the B&Q Foundation.

Gifts in Wills have the power to change lives
Gifts in Wills help fund end of life care for 1 in 4 patients across east Kent, every year.
Jayne, a dedicated fundraiser and supporter, explains why she has chosen to leave a gift to Pilgrims Hospices in her Will.
“I had a dear friend who became a Pilgrims in-patient in 1983. Up until then I had never been into a hospice and, like many others, had a perception that it would be a gloomy, foreboding place. However, I was delighted to experience Pilgrims as caring, welcoming and supportive – a bright, vibrant building and truly caring, kind, friendly and compassionate staff. They took care of my friend so well – and also helped her family with their grief when my friend died.
“I was so very impressed with this incredible organisation and the care they gave my friend and her family at all stages of her journey – I could not believe this incredible charity was funded almost entirely through donations. I vowed at that point to do all I could to support such a worthy cause. Since then, I have fundraised for Pilgrims on numerous occasions – and I still am fundraising now. Over the years I’ve done all sorts of things – including running six marathons, organising my own fundraising events and taking part in many organised by Pilgrims. The list is long – and it will continue to grow!
I have chosen to also make a gift in my Will, so my support can continue, even when I am no longer here in person.
Jayne
“In 2009, I was made redundant – so I dedicated half a day every week to volunteer at Pilgrims, as well as continuing to fundraise. I started later that year as part of the Canterbury volunteer group and my duties included manning reception and taking tea and coffee to the patients and families on the wards. I was then trained as a hospice complementary therapist, to give hand and foot massages to the patients and carers when they came to the hospice for pamper days. In 2011, Pilgrims started the Dover Outreach – so I went there every Friday to provide hand and foot massage to patients and carers.
“I’ve kept in close contact with Pilgrims since, and in July 2023, I started running a programme at the Canterbury Therapy Centre called Relax and Restore – again as a volunteer. The programme made a really positive difference to patients.
“My long-term relationship supporting Pilgrims – both as a fundraiser and volunteer – is the reason why I have chosen to also make a gift in my Will, so my support can continue, even when I am no longer here in person.”
Jayne’s support for Pilgrims will continue, even when she’s gone.

Pilgrims Hospices Faversham shop celebrates 40 years of community spirit
The Pilgrims Hospices shop on West Street, Faversham, is celebrating an incredible 40 years of service to the local community.
Over the past four decades, this beloved shop has become a cherished part of Faversham life, offering everything from unique finds to a welcoming smile.
As part of the Pilgrims Hospices family, the shop plays a vital role in supporting compassionate end-of-life care across east Kent.
Exciting refurbishment ahead
To mark this special occasion, the Faversham shop will be closing its doors temporarily from Monday 30 September 2024 for a fresh and fabulous refurbishment. The shop will reopen on Thursday 24 October at 10am, unveiling a vibrant new look that seamlessly blends its rich history with modern updates.
Manager Rob Adams and his dedicated team are eager to welcome customers back to a shop that retains its warm, familiar atmosphere while offering some exciting new touches.
This will be a fantastic opportunity for shoppers to grab brand new high street clothing at incredible charity shop prices. With racks full of unworn items, this is a rare chance to refresh your wardrobe while supporting a cause close to the heart of the Faversham community.
Sustainability and community first
In keeping with the growing trend toward sustainable shopping, the shop’s commitment to rehoming preloved items has never been more relevant.
By shopping at Pilgrims, customers not only find great bargains but also contribute to reducing waste, all while supporting essential hospice care for those who need it most.
Voices of the volunteers
The shop’s success over the years wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering dedication of its volunteers, many of whom have been with the shop for several years.
Anne, from Yorkletts, has volunteered for over three years. After receiving care for her father-in-law from Pilgrims Hospices, she was inspired to give back:
“It was an obvious choice to volunteer here. The team is fantastic, and we share so many laughs. It’s a great place to be, and I feel like I’m doing something meaningful for the community.”
Sara, a local Faversham resident, found her place at the hospice shop after retiring from public service:
“This shop has given me a renewed sense of purpose. It’s not just about sorting donations, it’s about meeting people, making friends, and being part of something bigger. I’m so excited to see the fresh new look.”
Jan, who has volunteered for almost eight years, also shared her thoughts:
“I’ve lived in Faversham for 45 years, and this town has an incredible community spirit. Volunteering at the shop keeps me connected, and I love every minute of it.”
A heartfelt thank you
Rob Adams, the shop’s manager, extended his gratitude to everyone who has supported the shop over the years:
“We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our amazing volunteers and loyal customers. The shop is more than just a place to find a bargain — it’s a part of Faversham’s fabric. Thank you for 40 years of support, and here’s to many more!”

Pilgrims Hospices to host reading group for patients and carers
This autumn, Pilgrims Hospices is excited to introduce a new reading group, offering patients and carers a chance to come together and enjoy the beauty of literature.
The six-week group, generously funded by the Royal Literary Society, will be hosted by Alicia Foster, a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund (RLF) and a professional writer.
Each week, Alicia will select pieces of short fiction and poetry to read aloud and share with the group. After each reading, there will be an opportunity to discuss the material as a group. However, there’s no obligation to participate in the discussion – the focus is on creating a welcoming, relaxed space where everyone can share in the enjoyment of words.
The group will take place at Pilgrims Hospices’ Canterbury Therapy Centre, but it is open to patients and carers from all Pilgrims sites. If the group proves popular, there are plans to replicate it in the future, potentially with our own staff leading similar sessions.
Alicia Foster, who has experience running Reading Round groups in various settings, said: “The intention is to create a welcoming and unpressured space where we can share a pleasure in words.
“There’s no pressure to participate in discussions, but many enjoy sharing their thoughts. I’m looking forward to bringing it to Pilgrims.”
The group will begin in October 2024, aligning perfectly with the season when cosy, reflective activities like reading feel just right as the nights draw in. Reading groups like this one can offer profound benefits, from helping participants understand new perspectives and process difficult experiences, to fostering feelings of hope, empathy, and contentment. Reading is also known to improve self-esteem, self-awareness, and overall wellbeing.
If you’re interested in joining the group, simply call Pilgrims Hospices and ask to be connected to the Wellbeing team at your local site.
Spaces are limited, so don’t hesitate to get in touch:
“We’re really excited to offer this reading group to our patients and carers this autumn. It’s such a wonderful opportunity to come together in a relaxed setting and enjoy the simple pleasure of hearing and sharing stories.
“At Pilgrims Hospices, we always strive to support emotional and mental wellbeing as much as physical care, and reading has been shown to have amazing benefits. It allows our patients and carers to find time for themselves, away from worry and daily stress. I truly believe this group will bring a sense of connection and comfort to those who join, and we’re delighted to be able to offer this unique experience.”

Super fundraiser Sian raises over £1,000 for Pilgrims Hospices in memory of mum
Sian fundraised in memory of her mum, Denise, who received Pilgrims care in 2022.
Sian felt so supported by Pilgrims during her mum’s illness that she wanted to give back.
She said: “Pilgrims regularly checked in, ensuring she was comfortable with the huge changes in her life that she was about to face. They fitted aids throughout our home to support her as her physical strength gradually worsened.
“In the days leading up to her passing, she got sick. We phoned Pilgrims for advice, and they informed our GP and requested a scan. On the morning of the scan, Mum struggled to get up. I called Pilgrims and they told me to phone the hospital. This became one of the last days we spent with Mum; without Pilgrims’ guidance, we wouldn’t have had that extra time with her before she passed.
“During this period when Mum was unwell, I was on my own caring for her whilst trying to balance working a full-time job as well as making time for myself. Pilgrims acted as a friend, offering advice and support.
“No one can prepare you to lose a parent. Life is short, and although I would’ve loved to spend the rest of my life with Mum, having those extra days with her made me eternally grateful – and it’s all thanks to Pilgrims for listening to me on the other end of that phone call.
Sian took on The Big Half on Sunday 1 September 2024.
Her friends, family and local gym – Muscle Hut in Ashford – helped her to raise more than £1,000 for Pilgrims.
She added:
“I’m so grateful for the support Pilgrims provided throughout a very difficult time on our family. They were always within arm’s reach, and I’m extremely excited to be giving back to them in any way I can.”
Pilgrims has a limited number of charity places in The Big Half 2025, you can secure your spot on the start line today, for free, with a pledge to raise at least £350 sponsorship for hospice care.
