30 years, 30 prizes and a mystery winner: Pilgrims Hospices Lottery brings Comfort and Joy this Christmas
Somewhere, possibly in east Kent, a Pilgrims Hospices Lottery winner is walking around completely unaware that there’s a prize waiting for them! Where are you, Mr Smith (previously of the Herne Bay area)?
While the mystery of the missing first prize winner from one of our weekly draws continues… there’s plenty more excitement ahead, as the Pilgrims Hospices Lottery celebrates its 30th anniversary with this year’s festive Comfort and Joy Superdraw.
And there’s a lovely bit of Christmas maths to go with it – 30 years, 30 prizes and tickets costing just £1 each.
The 2026 Superdraw has a total prize fund of £4,300, with four main cash prizes and a further 26 festive prizes up for grabs.
Since the Pilgrims Hospices Lottery began in 1996, thousands of people across east Kent have taken part, helping to raise vital funds for hospice care while enjoying the chance to win a prize themselves.
“We have our players’ details safely on file for contacting winners, but on this occasion our winner has moved. We’re keeping the winnings safe and will be ready with a surprise when they get in touch with their new address details.
“It’s such a shame to have a winner who doesn’t yet know they’ve won, so we’re keeping everything crossed that they’ll be in touch really soon!
“It’s also a wonderful year for the Lottery as we celebrate 30 years. We’re incredibly proud of everything our supporters have helped us achieve over the past three decades. Every ticket bought, whether it wins a prize or not, helps us continue providing care to local people when they need it most.”
Could you be our mystery winner?
The Lottery team is hoping the unclaimed winner will come forward soon, and anyone who has recently moved house might want to make sure their Lottery details are up to date.
Annie Pritchard
30 years of supporting Pilgrims
Among the thousands of people who have supported the Pilgrims Hospices Lottery over the past 30 years is Thanet-based supporter, Annie Pritchard, who has been playing since the Lottery began in 1996.
Annie’s support for Pilgrims goes far beyond her regular Lottery entry. Over the years, she has been part of the Pilgrims family and continues to be a familiar and much-loved face at fundraising events and activities. She also volunteers in the Pilgrims’ shops, helping to raise even more vital funds for local hospice care.
Reflecting on three decades of supporting Pilgrims, Annie said:
“I can hardly believe it’s been 30 years! I started playing the Pilgrims Lottery all those years ago and, along the way, I’ve had the privilege of becoming involved in so many other parts of Pilgrims, too.
“I’ve always thought that if you’re going to spend £1, you might as well have a little bit of fun with it, and knowing that every ticket helps Pilgrims makes it even more worthwhile. I’ve never quite managed to win the big prize, but I think I’ve definitely won when it comes to the wonderful people I’ve met along the way!
“Pilgrims has been a very special part of my life for many years, and I’m incredibly proud to still be able to support the hospice through volunteering, fundraising and, of course, my Lottery membership. Here’s to the next 30 years!”
Pilgrims Hospices would like to say a very special thank you to Annie for being such an amazing and loyal supporter over the past three decades.
The Lottery currently has more than21,000 entries every week and raises more than £1.2 million each year to support Pilgrims Hospices.
And there’s an important reason behind all those numbers. Every £1 ticket helps Pilgrims provide compassionate, specialist care to local people living with life-limiting illness, and support for their families, in its three hospices and across the community.
In 2025, the Christmas Superdraw raised more than £75,000 for hospice care.

Sue Sharp, Director of Marketing and Income Generation, with the ITV Meridian News team at the Canterbury hospice site
More than 125 incredible volunteers took part, supported by local businesses who kindly donated their time, vans, and equipment free of charge. Pilgrims staff also worked throughout the weekend to make sure collections ran smoothly and efficiently.
At the Canterbury hospice site, chipping services were once again kindly donated by the father-and-son team at D. Parr Tree Surgeons, who have a personal connection to the hospice’s care.
Sue Sharp, Director of Marketing and Income Generation at Pilgrims Hospices, said:
“This campaign is all about community spirit – turning festive trees into vital care for families in east Kent. Every tree collected helps fund essential hospice services, and we couldn’t do it without our incredible volunteers, supporters, and local businesses.”
All collected trees were processed in an environmentally friendly way – mapped for the most efficient routes, chipped, and reused for landscaping, composting, and even in the hospice’s own gardens.
Since the campaign began in Ashford 14 years ago, over 25,000 trees have been collected and more than £450,000 raised for Pilgrims Hospices.
It’s a brilliant way for communities to recycle, celebrate, and make a difference – one tree at a time!

The group was supported by Wellbeing Practitioners, Kate Brewer and Jane Stanley, who were on hand to encourage, guide and help keep spirits high.

Kate explained:
“The Time to Create group at Pilgrims Hospices is a regular, weekly art and craft therapy session for patients – and sometimes a family member. It offers a chance to develop new skills, create lasting memories, and connect with others in a supportive, calm environment designed to reduce stress and improve wellbeing.”
The benefits of creative wellbeing activities
Art and craft sessions offer much more than just a finished piece to take home; they support patients emotionally, socially and psychologically:
Skill development: Learn something new or rediscover past creative interests
Stress relief: A soothing activity that reduces anxiety, encourages mindfulness, and creates space to relax
Social connection: Build friendships and chat with others who understand similar experiences
Legacy building: Create meaningful, personal items to share with loved ones
Voices from the group
Regular attendee, Lesley, shared:
“I really enjoy the company. We always find lots to talk about, and I’ve got a wicked sense of humour – I love making people laugh.”
Graham was delighted with his festive crafting:
“I’ve enjoyed making Christmas cards today. I’ve made one especially for my sister with a penguin theme because I know she loves them.”
Jane added:
“We theme our activities around what’s happening in the world – whether it’s Christmas or another seasonal moment – to make sessions feel uplifting and meaningful.”
Pilgrims run a wide range of wellbeing groups and activities designed to support patients to live well, stay connected and enjoy the best quality of life possible.

Thousands raised at Pilgrims Hospices Christmas Fair
Hundreds attended the Pilgrims Hospices annual Christmas Fair on Saturday 22 November 2025 held at PGL Beyond, Grosvenor Hall, Ashford, where over £14,500 was raised.
Visitors enjoyed delicious refreshments, festive music, and games galore. There was lots to keep children entertained in the craft corner, including decorating a gingerbread shape and painting a plate. Father Christmas and his elves managed to find the time to join us and handed out presents to lots of excited children.
Many local companies and organisations showed their support and donated towards the weekend. With special thanks to PGL Beyond, Kingswood, Grosvenor Hall for the use of their wonderful venue, and our sponsor, Ultima Care.
Community Fundraising Manager, Louise Newman, said:
“A huge thank you from the Pilgrims Fundraising team. We really couldn’t make these amazing events happen without your help. We are grateful to everyone who donated items or joined us on the day; it was a fantastic day and an amazing amount was raised. With the support of over 90 volunteers, we have been able to raise vital funds for Pilgrims!”
Our next Ashford event is our Christmas Tree Recycling campaign, which is a great opportunity to get your real Christmas tree collected by our teams of Pilgrims volunteers. Find out more atpilgrimshospices.org/treerecycling.

Pilgrims Hospices’ eco-friendly Tree Recycling campaign returns
Each January, many Christmas trees head to landfills once the festive season comes to an end. But thanks to Pilgrims Hospices’ annual Tree Recycling campaign, this doesn’t have to be the case.
Each year, thousands of Pilgrims supporters recycle their Christmas trees, helping to reduce their environmental impact and raise vital funds for local hospice care.
The Tree Recycling campaign began over 13 years ago in the Ashford Borough Council area, thanks to a group of dedicated hospice volunteers, who are still pivotal in supporting the Ashford campaign today.
Then in 2022, the charity ‘branched’ out to cover Canterbury City Council and Thanet District Council areas; as well as hosting a drop-off station in Faversham with ‘tree-rific’ success.
Since its inception, the charity has collected over 20,000 trees, raised more than £368,000, and prevented over 320 tonnes of CO₂e from entering the atmosphere.
In 2025, the campaign raised a staggering £78,000, directly supporting patients and their families across east Kent. These funds are raised simply by registering your tree and making a donation online. So, you can ‘leaf’ the hard work to our wonderful team of Pilgrims elves, who collect and recycle your real Christmas trees.

A greener way to give
This incredible impact wouldn’t be possible without the continued support of our local communities and volunteers, whose bright idea grew into a campaign that has more than 75 volunteers involved each year, helping to raise vital funds, ensuring we can be there for those who need us.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of local businesses and volunteers who donate their time, vehicles and facilities, in 2025 we were able to collect over 4,200 Christmas trees, preventing more than 67 tonnes of CO₂e from entering the atmosphere. Instead of going to a landfill and releasing harmful methane, the trees are chipped and repurposed into mulch or compost-eco-friendly by-products that break down slowly and sustainably. A ‘tree-rific’ example of community collaboration for a shared environmental and social goal.
The second life of Christmas trees
Our collections are carefully planned using digital mapping software, allowing us to design the most efficient routes. This reduces travel distances, maximises household collections, and lowers our overall carbon footprint. Once collected, trees are taken to our Canterbury or Thanet hospice sites, where they’re chipped and repurposed for environmental landscaping across east Kent. Some of the chippings are even used within our own hospice grounds, while others are donated to local composting projects or animal rescue centres, giving your tree a second life in the most sustainable way.
Every tree continues to do good long after the decorations come down. It’s a simple act with a powerful impact.
Tree Recycling 2026
