Pilgrims Hospice Ashford hospice family lounge benefits from refurbishment
The family lounges at Pilgrims Hospices sites provide a space for patients and their friends and family to spend time away from their bedside, in a calm and relaxing environment.
Kitchen area in the refurbished Ashford hospice lounge
With the support of a number of Trusts, businesses and community groups, we were able to completely update the Ashford lounge space so it can be enjoyed by patients and their loved ones.
Before the renovation, the room was dark and had little natural light, the furniture was tired and the decor needed a refresh.
The lounge is now a comfortable and welcoming space, which can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.

Sustainable giving
The business community across east Kent support Pilgrims in many ways, from charity of the year partnerships to organising events to raise funds. In 2025, Pilgrims has been generously supported by the team from Folkestone-based construction company, AW Group, who has donated hundreds of pounds worth of materials, which would otherwise go to waste.
We’ve received timber to help revamp our nurses station, strip lighting and glass panels to be used in our retail shops, and much more. Most recently, our maintenance team at the Canterbury hospice were able to construct a lockable store room from donated timber and a new flooring from vinyl tiles.
Thank you to the team at AW Group, who have chosen to support Pilgrims as their charity of the year for 2025. They recently raised £5,255 by cycling from Folkestone to Paris and taking part in the Pilgrims Way Challenge.

Hikers go the extra mile at the Pilgrims Way Challenge!
On Saturday 21 June, more than 700 supporters came together to take on the annual Pilgrims Way Challenge, in support of Pilgrims Hospices.
This beloved event welcomed both regular ramblers and first time participants, all coming together under the glorious sunshine in support of their local hospice.
Pilgrims Hospices is delighted to announce that, thanks to the incredible efforts of everyone who took part, the event has currently raised its biggest ever total at £187,000 – and climbing!
Walkers could choose from a 25km, 35km or 55km route, each offering its own challenge and a chance to enjoy east Kent’s beautiful countryside.

The 55km stretched from Dover to Wye via Canterbury, and for those seeking a shorter journey, alternative routes included Dover to Canterbury at 35km, and Canterbury to Wye at 25km. With all three routes either passing through or ending at the Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury, the hospice stayed at the centre of the day, and a clear reminder of the cause behind every step.
A team of Pilgrims’ very own hospice heroes took part in the challenge, as nurses and carers swapped their uniforms for walking boots to take on the 35km route from Dover to Canterbury.
It was a chance to raise vital funds and awareness for the compassionate care they provide every day, and to come together outside of work for a great team experience with a shared purpose.

Head of Fundraising, Kate Duddell, said:
“Seven years ago, this started as a local hiking event and now it’s a beloved tradition that brings people together for a cause that touches so many.
“Thank you to everyone who’s joined us over the years and helped us to make it our biggest year so far!”
The true stars of the day were undoubtedly the volunteers, including crossing marshals, registration helpers, refreshment teams and signage crews. Their warm encouragement helped to lift the spirits of everyone taking part in this important Pilgrims Hospices fundraising event. Thanks to their dedication, the day ran seamlessly and was an enjoyable experience for all involved.

Pilgrims Hospices’ Christmas Tree Recycling campaign raises record-breaking £78,465 for end-of-life care
Pilgrims Hospices is delighted to announce the success of its recent Christmas Tree Recycling campaign, which took place over the weekend of January 10-12, 2025.
The environmentally-friendly initiative saw more than 4,200 real Christmas trees collected from residents across Canterbury, Ashford, and Thanet, as well as from those who dropped off their trees at Faversham’s Macknade Food Hall.
This year’s campaign was a record-breaker, raising an incredible £78,465 to support the charity’s vital end-of-life care services.

The annual campaign has become a cherished tradition within the local community, combining environmental responsibility with charitable giving. Residents registered their real Christmas trees for collection in exchange for a donation, and a dedicated team of Pilgrims’ staff and volunteers ensured the trees were collected and recycled responsibly. The chippings from the recycled trees are used for composting and soil improvement, contributing to local agricultural efforts and within the hospices’ own grounds.
Kate Duddell, Head of Fundraising at Pilgrims Hospices, expressed her gratitude: “We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from the east Kent community. Collecting over 4,200 trees and raising £78,465 is a testament to the generosity of our supporters and the hard work of our dedicated volunteers. These funds are crucial in helping us provide compassionate end-of-life care to those who need it most.”
The success of this campaign would not have been possible without the support and collaboration of local councils, businesses, tree chippers, and an army of volunteers who donated their time, vehicles, and expertise to ensure the thousands of Christmas trees were chipped and recycled.
