Artwork Catman, ‘Superhumans’, to be auctioned in aid of Pilgrims
You may have seen earlier in the year a striking image pop up in Whitstable dedicated to frontline workers. Spray painted by anonymous street artist Catman who is local to Whitstable, the image titled, ‘Superhumans’ has been admired by passers-by as our community continue to pay tribute to those responding to COVID- 19. Catman has gifted a one off original copy of this touching image in order to raise vital funds for local hospice care in east Kent.
Paying homage to key workers across the UK in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Catman created the inspiring image on the side of the Pilgrims Whitstable general store. Catman said: “While the town was in isolation, I painted this in dedication to all the superhuman frontline staff out there working tirelessly to keep us and our loved ones safe and well.”
We are delighted by this generous gift, and we are incredibly thankful
Leila – Pilgrims
As we find ourselves in another national lockdown the incredible front line workers at Pilgrims and across the NHS are still here; still caring for patients living with an incurable illness and their families in east Kent.
The charity is honoured to be in receipt of a piece of Catman’s artwork, Canterbury Community Fundraising Manager Leila Ilkhan said: “We are delighted by this generous gift and to have the opportunity to raise vital funds from such a touching piece of artwork. Without the vital support of our community we would not be able to carry on with our work to ensure those who are living with an incurable illness have access to the specialist care and comfort they need. We are incredibly thankful.“

The Ship Centurion sails in with 10K charity cheque
The Ship Centurion pub, on Whitstable High Street has been raising funds for Pilgrims Hospices. Landlord Roland Burks recently presented the hospice with an amazing cheque for £10,000, generously donated by his customers and staff over the past 18 months.
The traditional German pub has a long history stretching back to 1750; its well-established group of regular customers and staff were asked to nominate a local charity to support and, Pilgrims won by clear majority.
Visitors to the pub have been taking part in Sunday meat raffles, with a chance to win a selection of prizes from local vendor Jim’s Family Butchers. They’ve been busy pub quizzing, guessing the lottery bonus ball, taking part in a wide variety of raffles and activities throughout the year not to mention the sales of the locally famous Armin Arse rippers! (Spicy pickled eggs and onions).
We wish to say a huge thank you to Roland, his staff and customers.
Jo Harris, Community Fundraising Officer
Landlord Roland said: “Pilgrims Hospices was clearly the favourite local charity to support. Many of my customers have been touched by Pilgrims care, they speak so highly of the care and support received by loved ones and their families.
“We are delighted to have raised such a large total, our pub has a well-established group of regulars and we are very proud to nurture a real sense of community.”
Jo Harris, Pilgrims Canterbury Community Fundraising Officer said: “We wish to say a huge thank you to Roland, his staff and customers at the Ship Centurion for choosing to support Pilgrims Hospices.
“It is lovely to see the community supporting Pilgrims so generously, this will help us continue being there for patients and their families, when and where they need us.”

Laura is shining in memory of her dad Robert
Laura Homden from Whitstable, will be taking part in Pilgrims Hospices A Night to Shine sponsored walk on Friday 20 September; walking in memory of her dad Robert Bennett. Laura has already exceeded her fundraising expectations by raising over £550 to support the charity that cared for her father.
Laura told us: “Mum and Dad lived in Whitstable where he ran his building business with his brothers. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was only 57 when he passed away at Pilgrims Hospice Canterbury in November 2007.
“The family miss Dad every day; so, when my niece Ella saw the event promoted she encouraged my sister Kate and I to sign up and do something positive to raise extra money for the charity that made such a difference to Dad’s final days of life.
“I’m looking forward to the 5-mile sponsored walk and want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been so generous by donating to my JustGiving fundraising page. I had set myself a target to raise £150 and it’s wonderful to have tripled that figure with the contributions from friends and family. Walking A Night to Shine will mean so much more knowing I have helped to provide care for those who need Pilgrims’ help the most.
We all miss Dad every day.
Laura
“I didn’t know very much about Pilgrims Hospices before Dad’s illness, actually if I’m truthful I found it all quite scary but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The care given was amazing. Dad was at the centre of everything the care team did, making him feel comfortable was always their top priority. They were there for his every need and even managed to find time to check on the family and help us through such difficult times. Pilgrims is very close to all of our hearts.”
Laura added, “The family has become great supporters and donate whenever we can; we want this amazing place to always be there for families in need.”
You can join Laura and her family at A Night to Shine on Friday 20 September for a fun night-time sponsored walk with live music, a friendly party atmosphere and lots more.
