Tree-mendous news, Pilgrims Hospices Christmas Tree Recycling is returning to Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet this festive season.
The environmentally-friendly fundraising initiative makes saying farewell to your festive fir as easy as possible, so that you can enjoy a hassle-free end of the festive period, in the knowledge that you are supporting a much-loved local charity.
Help Pilgrims to take care of the planet and hospice patients one tree at a time!
All you have to do is register on Pilgrims’ website and make a donation of your choice. Pilgrims’ volunteer elves will collect your real tree from your doorstep, where it will continue on a journey to be recycled.
There’s no need to mess up your car with pine needles, Pilgrims volunteers will do all the hard work for you and, in return, you will be helping to support the vital end-of-life care of local people through your donation.
Kate Duddell, Pilgrims Hospices Fundraising Manager said: “It’s really important to dispose of your real tree in a sustainable way. We are grateful for the support of Canterbury City Council, the incredible ongoing support of Ashford Borough Council, who have now supported the campaign for 11 years, Thanet District Council, and the huge number of volunteers, and local businesses who give up their time to help us raise vital funds in early January. Our last, and first, Christmas Tree Recycling campaign raised in excess of an amazing £42,000 and more than 2,250 real trees were collected by Pilgrims Hospices across east Kent. We hope the lovely and supportive local community will do the same again this year.”
Canterbury area
The doorstep collections will take place between 6 – 9 January 2023, but you need to register by midnight on Monday 2 January to book your collection. If you live in Canterbury, Sturry, Chartham, Bridge, Herne Bay, Chestfield, Whitstable, Seasalter or surrounding villages within the Canterbury City Council area, Pilgrims’ elves will come and collect your real Christmas tree!
Ashford area
The doorstep collections will take place between 14 – 16 January 2023, but you need to register by midnight on Monday 9 January to book your collection. If you live in Ashford, Tenterden, Charing, Wye. Appledore, Chilham or surrounding villages within the Ashford Borough Council area, Pilgrims elves’ will come and collect your real Christmas tree!
Thanet area
The doorstep collections will take place between 6 – 9 January 2023, but you need to get registered by midnight on Monday 2 January to book your collection. If you live in Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate, Westgate-on-Sea, Birchington, St Nicholas-at-Wade, Minster or all the surrounding villages Pilgrims elves will come and collect your real Christmas tree!
Faversham drop-off recycling station
If you live outside of the Canterbury City Council area, you can still support Pilgrims Hospices and recycle your real Christmas tree. You can bring your tree to Pilgrims designated drop-station at Macknade, Faversham, ME13 8XF on Saturday 7 (9:00 – 16:00) and Sunday 8 (10:00 – 16:00) January 2023. Please book online in advance here for the drop-off station at Macknade.
The scheme is delivered with the fir-tastic support of Kent County Council (KCC) and Kent’s Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC), FCC Environment, together with the local councils, all the parties are helping Pilgrims to recycle the trees; all for a good claus.

Hundreds of festive fundraisers braved the chilly temperatures and embraced the ho, ho, holiday spirit on Sunday 11 December 2022 as they dashed along Margate seafront at Santas on the Seashore! all for a good Claus.
Margate was filled with Christmas cheer as more than 250 honorary Santas and elves ran, jogged, skipped and walked their way along the 3k or 5k route in support of Pilgrims Hospices, who care for thousands of local people each year who are living with an incurable illness.
The event is supported by a number of local companies and organisations, including Wahl. Grace Gummer from the east Kent-based company told us: “We love supporting this fantastic festive event for such a deserving local charity. It brings the community together and raises money in aid of the great care that Pilgrims Hospices offer families at such a difficult time.”
Early estimations show that this year, Santas on the Run! Tri-Series will raise in excess of £25,000. This could help fund the entire cost of Pilgrims Hospices community care teams for five days, as they provide specialist end-of-life care to patients spending Christmas at home with their families, and creating lasting memories.
Karen Kenward, Community Fundraising Manager, said: “Watching over 250 Santas and elves run, jog and walk through Margate on Sunday was truly a sight to been seen. Many drivers beeped their horns, and passersby cheered them all the way. I would like to personally thank Margate Ambulance, Pete our DJ, Sarah for our warm-up, Jackie on catering, Pilgrims Hospices staff, volunteers and all of our incredible supporters who came out to support this event in the cold to help raise further funding to support all of our services. The countdown to Christmas has officially begun with Pilgrims Hospices Santas on the Harbour!
Hundreds of festive fundraisers got into the ho, ho, holiday spirit by dashing along the Folkestone seafront on Sunday 4 December 2022 at Santas on the Harbour!
The historic Folkestone Harbour Arm was filled with Christmas cheer as over 250 honorary Santas and elves registered to run, jog, skip and walk their way along the 3k or 5k route in support of Pilgrims Hospices, who care for thousands of local people each year living with an incurable illness.
Many families enjoyed the jolly jog.
Early estimations show that this year, Santas on the Run! Tri-Series will raise in excess of £20,000. This could help fund the entire cost of Pilgrims Hospices community care teams for four days, as they provide specialist end-of-life care to patients spending Christmas at home with their families, and creating lasting memories.
Louise Newman, Community Fundraising Manager for Ashford Hospice said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone that braved the cold winds on Sunday at the Harbour Arm and along the chilly seafront. We really appreciate all of the wonderful fundraising from our Santas and elves, this will make a real difference to the many families being cared for by Pilgrims this Christmas.”

Trees of Love return to Pilgrims Hospices
Pilgrims Hospices’ Trees of Love remembrance services have seen over 1,000 local people join together each year in memory of their loved ones to raise vital funds to support the incredible services that Pilgrims offers.
Trees of Love is an important event for many families who come together with others who may have shared similar experiences, to remember their loved ones. Guests are invited to come along to see their dedicated dove on one of the Trees of Love, listen to festive and remembrance readings and sing carols, whilst enjoying a warm mince pie, hot chocolate or mulled wine.
“Christmas is a special time of year for families and friends to come together, but losing a loved one can make celebrating this time of year very difficult.
“Trees of love is a place for all to come together in remembering their loved ones during the festive season. We are thrilled to be able to invite everyone back to our hospices for our remembrance services, which we have been unable to host due to the restrictions in place during the pandemic.
“We will also be releasing a Trees of Love film again as we understand how important this has become for those who choose to remember at home.”
Trees of Love has been an important fundraiser for the hospice for more than 25 years, helping to care for those living with life-limiting illnesses and support their families after they are gone.
It offers a space for anyone throughout east Kent who has lost someone special to join together, to reflect and remember their loved ones year on year.
Trees of Love events will take place at our hospices in Ashford, Canterbury and Thanet at 5pm on Saturday 3 December 2022.

The invaluable support of Trusts and Foundations
Pilgrims Hospices receive £2.4 million annually from the NHS, yet to provide its services to the local community costs £15 million a year, or £40,000 a day.
To bridge our funding gap, Pilgrims applies to a variety of Trusts and Foundations to fund specific services as well as new projects.
Trusts and Foundations is a term for a wide and diverse set of charitable bodies. Their motivations and ways of operating are as distinctive as the individuals and organisations they represent. Trust and Foundations fundraising refers to the process of asking or applying for support from these charitable bodies that are empowered to make grants for charitable purposes.
Our Trusts and Grant funders have enabled us to purchase a wide range of specialist medical equipment and helped to deliver vital building and refurbishment works. Additionally, funding for core running costs helps Pilgrims to continue delivering its services free of charge for the east Kent community. Pilgrims receive grants of varying sizes, and each and every one makes an incredible difference to its patients and hospice settings.

Isabel Smith, Trusts Fundraiser, said: “At Pilgrims Hospices, we are fortunate enough to have received support from a number of Trusts and Foundations. Last year, we received in excess of £185,000 in various grants to support our vital care across the three hospice sites. Each grant is important and makes a significant difference to the patients who we care for. As a charity, we are extremely grateful for every grant that we receive.”
Kate White, Head of Nursing, added: “People think that hospices are sad places, but really they are places to help our patients live fully and well in the time that they have. Ongoing improvements to our facilities and equipment enable families, carers and patients to have a brighter and more inspiring setting for their care. A hospice isn’t a place to be fearful of – it is a place that removes fears. Every day we want to continue in the spirit of delivering innovative end-of-life care, by updating our facilities.”
Here are just a few recent examples of the generous support that Trusts provide:
The Albert Hunt Trust donated a very generous £50,000 to contribute towards Pilgrims’ essential core running costs; this continued support is so valuable to the charity.
Cantiacorum Foundation made a generous donation to allow Pilgrims to purchase a new floor scrubber and dryer machine. This helps ensure floor cleaning is always at an exceptionally high standard and surfaces are left clean and dry immediately, to ensure minimal disruption is caused to hospice users.
The Provincial Grand Lodges of Mark Master Masons of Kent supported Pilgrims with an incredible £16,000 donation from their Mark Benevolent Fund, to be used towards core running costs. Pilgrims is very grateful to them for their continued support throughout east Kent.
At Pilgrims Hospice Ashford, the Frank Brake Charitable Trust kindly funded the Therapy Centre downstairs reception and garden pergola. Pilgrims is proud of its long association with the Trust and is extremely indebted to them for their continued support.
Pilgrims Hospices is thankful to all of the Trusts and Foundations who have or continue to support the charity; it simply couldn’t provide its expert, end-of-life care without them.
There are many items of equipment that are always needed.
We are continually working on an equipment replacement program for the benefit of our patients and to enhance our clinical settings. These aren’t always funded by Trusts; sometimes they are funded by generous members of our community, too.
